Research and Development (R&D)
A Commitment to Innovation

Researcher in a laboratoryEach year, Novartis Pharmaceuticals Canada conducts clinical trials at hundreds of sites across the country, involving thousands of patients, researchers, and investigators.

Notable among these studies are those seeking new treatments for:

  • cardiovascular diseases
  • diabetes
  • irritable bowel syndrome
  • schizophrenia
  • organ transplantation
  • allergies
  • bone diseases
  • glaucoma
  • retinal diseases
  • different types of cancer.

Like many other members of Canada's Research-Based Pharmaceutical Companies (Rx&D), Novartis has greatly increased its R&D activities in Canada following the modernization of the nation's pharmaceutical patent laws in 1987 and 1993.

Since 1989, our annual R&D investment has grown from $17.1 million to over $55 million in 2004.
